Blog 11 - Lesson 1 Reflection

This is an example of environmental psychology because of the flow that it has and the designer wants to give them that feeling of going up the stairs but also that unique aspect that pops. This type of psychology really cant be taught its more of a gift.
  1. What are you most proud of in your lesson, and why?
    1. I’m proud of the information that I gave throughout the presentation because I felt as if all the information given showed that I have been working on my senior topic throughout the school year. I also got that feeling that I'm the only one that knows my topic so I felt confident and so proud that I was able to give my presentation without pausing to thing about information. I had a lot of information and I’m proud of that.
  2. What assessment would you give yourself on your lesson? Explain why you earned that grade using evidence from the component contract.
    1. I would give myself a AP+ to P because I felt as if I did hit all the requires that the contracted asked but then I know that I was nervous so I rushed really fast making it look unprofessional and too much. I also think that I went to fast that I forgot the reference things that would have made my presentation better and looked more rehearsed. I’m a hard grader on myself so that’s why I would give myself that grade but may people said I did good.
  3. If you could go back, what would you change about your lesson?  How can you use that knowledge to give a better Lesson 2?
    1. I would get color chips so they can visually see what I’m talking about and also bring in magazines so I can show then the concept of the lighting. I also want to be call and relaxed because I know I rush through my presentation and it looked unprofessional and unrehearsed. I also would like to have a better hook idea but this would take a while to use creativity because a lot of the cool activities that I can do requires technology so I should think about the activity before anything else.

Blog 10 - Interview 2 Reflection

This is what AutoCAD looks like when you do 3D models.
Interview 2
  1. Please explain how you are spending your mentorship time (Is it at a workplace or somewhere else?  Are you shadowing?  Are you able to do tasks that are meaningfully related to the topic?  If so, what?  Are there other people who are experts in the location?  Etc...)
    1. I go to a firm that my mentor owns and he makes me do tasks that a normal intern would do. I however get more liberty when it comes to my schedule because I’m his first high school student that he has ever worked with. He has a lot of interns in his firm but has a few actual works there; everyone however is a paid internship so he treats them like a worker. I do a lot of the small tasks though because I’m there the whole year while others are only there for a college semester.
  2. How did you find your mentor?  How did you convince this person to help you?
    1. I found my through a long chain of connections but the one who told me referred me to my mentor was Julian from HMC Architects. He then also told me about the IIDA Socal Inland Empire and I should use it when talking to Arcel. Arcel however opened his arms to me because I’m his first high school student and is impressed that someone so young wants to see how an internship works.
  3. How would you rate your comfort level with your mentor at this point in your relationship?  How does this relate to the time you've spent so far at mentorship/with this person?
    1. I first felt a little uncomfortable because I’m working with someone I don’t know but after texting him the first time we started to get a closer relationship and he actually is interested in my school life and how I’m doing. He gives that comfort level that you feel great when working with someone. I now get more tasks that are challenging but also interesting because I actually am starting to feel like if I work there. I have a good bond with my mentor so far and I’m trying not to take advantage of the freedom he gives me.
  4. What went well in this interview?  Why do you think so?  What do you still need to improve?  How do you know?  How will you go about it?
    1. This interview went a little fast and was straight to the point so I need to come up with more questions or I need to come with better open ended questions. I have my communication skills down when it comes to follow up questions; however it would be nice to make the interview longer. I feel good about the interview though because I learned a lot of new information and got to know my mentor more.

Blog 9 - Advisory Prep 3

Color cards are the most important items to have when doing color schemes.
  1. State whether or not you currently have a mentor, and what the status of your interview is with that person (I have completed the interview, I have scheduled the interview, I have not scheduled the interview, etc).
    1. I currently have a mentor and I have been going for a while now. It’s the same person that I did my summer hours with and he very understanding. I have scheduled an appointment with him next week but I feel as if it might end on a bad note.
  2. At this point, your research is probably guiding your studies toward more specific areas within your topic.  Name the area or two you find most promising and explain your reasons.
    1. I find color psychology and environmental psychology the interesting areas in my topic. They go so in depth with what you need to know when doing your job and it also gets your attention when it talks about how your brain functions with everything. It grasps attention easily but I fell as if all the people who are doing some type of design as their senior topic might fall with these two areas not making it unique.
  3. What kinds of sources do you think will help you in the next month to gain more research depth?  Where will you go to get them?
    1. I’ve been looking at a lot of sources that actually reference a lot of their research so I can just go to their bibliography and look for the sources that have the most depth in content. I can always go to some interns at the firm that I go to and ask them for sources that they find useful.
  4. Write down a possible EQ.  Please don't worry about wording other than ensuring that it provides the option for multiple correct answers.  At this point, the senior team is most interested in understanding your thought process.
    1. What is the best way to give clients their needs but also give them a unique result that makes you different from other designers?

Blog 8 - Independent Component 1 Proposal

This is one of the popular magazines that Interior Designers love to look at to get inspirations.
  1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
    1. I plan to do the process as if my parents were the clients and I was designing the house. I would be doing the floor plans for the house look into places that will give the cheapest material to fix the house. I’ll also do color schemes for the house to see how everything will look on the inside (elevation sketches in the inside.) I’ll have a budget to work with and fix what I can within that amount and then present it to my parents to see if they will approve the project or decline on remodeling the house.
  2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
    1. I’ll be doing in depth sketches for the whole inside of the house and also do elevations on the inside of the house. I’ll have inspiration boards to show were I got my ideas and from there also from coloring the floor plans with the color schemes that will go with the house. I’ll also print out the information on where I would get the materials and how much of the materials I would need.
  3. Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
    1. It’ll also me to understand the process what an Interior Designer goes through when dealing with a project. Many go through this process and have to do it multiple types until the client agrees with that the designer presents them.
  4. Update your Senior Project Hours log.
    1. I’ll update my log every time I work on a part of this process. I’ll be updating it and adding the hours correctly and if possible I’ll like to have my mentor review my work and progress if he has the time to do so.

Blog 7 - Second Interview Preparation

This a sketch of a modern bedroom floor plan.
  1. Who is your mentor and where do they work?  If their workplace does not reflect their expertise, what makes them an expert?
    1. My mentor is Arcel R. Punsalang and he has his own company called ArcelDesign, Inc. He’s a certified Interior Designer and has a position with the Southern California IIDA Inland Empire City Center. Arcel is the lead designer in his company and went to school to Mt. San Antonio College for the Interior Design program that this institution has.
  2. What five questions will you ask them about their background?
    1. How long have you been doing this profession and what inspired you to do this?
    2. Where did you do your schooling at and how do you believe that it is easy to be certified?
    3. Do you classify yourself as an experienced person in this profession?
    4. How did you know this profession was meant for you?
    5. If a client that you have is changing his/her mind often, how are you able to give them what you want without putting the items you already have to waste?
    6. The modern look is always changing, so how are you able to keep up with the trend making you an expert as an Interior Designer?

Blog 6 - Advisory Prep

This type of visual is rustic and gives that unique concept that the client wants.
1.      What has worked well for you concerning senior project this year?  What has made it a positive experience for you?
1.      The positive experience that I’m getting throughout the school year so far is seeing people’s faces when I tell them my topic. They find it interesting that someone is going this topic which it encourages me to actually strive for a better knowledge and go in depth with the Interior Design. This also gives me pressure because that means I need to work hard and know everything to make this experience worth it but also have a senior presentation worth going to.
2.      What are you finding difficult concerning senior project?  How can you adapt to make that portion work better for you?  How might the senior team help?
1.      Having a mentor that in all the way in City of Industry and I’m located about 20-30 minutes away from it makes it difficult to go offend. I’m trying to see if someone knows a mentor closer to my area so the commute can be easier and I can start to establish that bond with my mentor. I’m also a little worried about the independent component because it may be difficult for me to do something in this topic so if anyone has ideas with helping on that it would be great.

Blog 5 - Interview 1 Reflection

This is a modern look layout that is in a hospitality location.
Interview 1
  1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?  Is there anything I would do differently for other interviews?
    1. I personally wouldn't do anything differently because I did receive a lot of information from this interview. I think it all falls down to who you interview and what makes them a person worthy enough to be interviewed. I learned that you should always have more questions than the ones that are asked because you tend to look back at your personal questions that you asked the interviewee to answer and those also tend to be more in depth questions if the question is structured correctly.
  2. Did I get additional resources and contacts?  What is the most useful?  Why?
    1. I got a lot of resource because she told me about topics to look into that fall in my topic. She also told me that I should work with someone and get a membership with programs that will help me get even more connections with other people. The most useful part was that we told me if I need anything else she is will to help me whenever I need her help.
  3. What makes my interviewee qualified to help me?
    1. My interviewee just graduated with her B.A. and is going to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona for her M.A. for Interior Architecture. She also has worked with ArcelDesign, Inc. since she started college and recently moved to HMC Architects.

Blog 4 - House Advisory Prep 1

The layout in this picture shows all the contrast throughout the view.
What I hope to accomplish on my senior project is to understand the true meaning of art. Art is expressed in many ways which interior design is one of those. If I understand the meaning that many interior designers try to express through their work I'll be able to appreciate a work that took so much time to execute. The process that comes with doing projects in this profession takes an average of months to years to give it the way the client wants it. If I'm able to understand the art aspect of interior design it'll allow me to expand my knowledge and guide me to the future steps in my life.

Blog 2 - Summer Mentorship

The work place that my mentor designed himself.
  1. List the contact name, phone number, and organization of the person with whom you volunteered.
    1. Arcel R. Punsalang CID, Assoc. IIDA
    2. (626)581-8880
    3. ArcelDesign, Inc.
  2.  What qualified this person as an expert in your topic choice?
    1. Certified Interior Designer #6911
    2. Principal/ Lead Designer
    3. Inland Empire City Center IIDA Student Affairs Liaison
  3. List three questions for further exploration now that you've completed your summer hours.
    1. When working on projects that require you to be outside the office, how are you able to remember every little detail that your sketches have?
    2. If a client that you have is changing his/her mind often, how are you able to give them what you want without putting the items you already have to waste?
    3. The modern look is always change so how are you able to keep up with the trend?
  4. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
    1. I learned that finding a mentor isn't easy, especially for a high school student. Some of the people i personally tried to contact weren't interested in have a minor helping them out. Having communication also played a big role because when you do have a mentor, you need to make sure to inform them on everything you do because they are busy doing things that they need to finish too, Some mentors will have you as their last priority.
  5. What is your senior project topic going to be?  How did mentorship help you make your decision?  Please explain.
    1. My senior topic is going to be on Interior Design. After releasing that this topic is interesting & not really about just remodeling a house & fluffing pillows. It requires a lot of work for really anyone but one thing that made me realize that this is meant for me was when I found that I'm detail orientated, something that this topic requires. My mentor helped me understand that this will help you go a long way on projects & I can't wait to get a start on them.

Blog 1 - Senior Final Lesson/Interview Reflection

A sketch that a designer did my hand.
    1. What three lessons were most helpful for you to see, and why?
      1. The passion that you put int the presentation really depends if you tried and if you know your information because from what I saw many people didn't have enthusiasm.
      2. Having more than one mini activity will keep your audience engaged and i saw this to be a better way than just having one big activity that just wastes your time while mini ones allow you to think of what to say after.
      3. Keeping track of time will allow you to make that flow in your presentation but you have to be careful because even if you make time you shouldn't really just give up on the rest of your presentation because it just seems as if you didn't try on your project.
    2. List one thing that you learned about the senior project in interviews that will help you get off to a good start?
      1.  I learned to get head start on your project and to not procrastinate on anything especially on your research. This will always make you have a head start on everything and never be behind.
    3. What topic(s) are you considering, and why?
      1.  Apparel Production
      2. Pediatrician
      3. Interior Designer
    4. What EQ do you think might be interesting to consider in guiding a project like this? (Please don't worry about any sort of formula...we want this question to come from your genuine interest).
      1.  What is the most effective way to attract your buyer to consume your product?
      2. What is the safest way to communicate with a patient that is difficult to understand?
      3. What is the best dynamic way for you to grasp the attention of a broad audience?
    5. What are some ideas you have about finding summer mentorship?
      1.  Communicate with the previous seniors so they can give me tips with communicating with their old mentor.
      2. Apply for a volunteer position at a primary care facility.
      3. Communicate with real estate companies that will provide me information with designers or go to IKEA.
